Supervisor Walkinshaw (Fairfax County’s Environmental Committee Chairman) will KICK OFF this wonderful event at 7:00 PM sharp by providing opening remarks about the PLASTIC CRISIS. Again, be sure to arrive early.
“Plastic Earth” is a groundbreaking documentary that explores the innovative solutions and technologies being developed worldwide to address and ultimately resolve the global plastic crisis. As plastic production from fossil-based sources continues to escalate, it poses significant threats to the environment, including climate change, pollution, and the endangerment of various species.

CHRIS HERRINGTON, Director of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) for Fairfax County, Virginia since July 2021. Chris brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to local government, accumulated over a span of 25 years while working for the City of Austin, Texas. During his tenure, he held positions such as assistant director for the Watershed Protection Department and senior environmental policy officer for the city. In these roles, he provided valuable guidance to public officials, city departments, and the general public on various development initiatives. Additionally, he played a crucial role as a staff liaison to the Environmental Committee.
STEPHANIE MILLER, Former Director of Climate Business at the World Bank Group and the author of Zero Waste Living, the 80/20 Way: The Busy Person’s Guide to a Lighter Footprint. She founded Zero Waste in DC where she reaches a wide audience through keynote presentations, learning events and household consultations.
KEN COTTRELL, Environmental Project Manager with 35 years of hazardous waste site cleanup experience. Ken has worked for commercial, municipal and Federal clients, including the management of $10M+ investigation and remediation projects for the US Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Defense with a legal and policy focus to achieve site closures.
MALA PERSAUD, Owner of TRACE, The Zero Waste Store in Vienna, VA, and serves on the Town of Vienna’s Conservation and Sustainability Commission. Mala is a former journalist turned communications consultant and sustainability entrepreneur. Transitioning from a career in network journalism where she was based in London for more than a decade, Mala then applied her skills and global perspective to help a range of global health, development and sustainability shape their communications strategies. Driven by a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship, in 2019, Mala took a step into entrepreneurship, founding Trace: The Zero Waste Store in Vienna, VA. At Trace, Mala has created a destination for eco-conscious consumers, with more than 150 package-free foods, soaps, detergents and personal care items, in addition to hundreds of eco-friendly products. Trace’s mission is to champion ethical consumption and provide a platform for community education. Mala has just received the Fairfax County Environmental Excellence Award.
