This captivating film invites us to dive deep into the enchanting world beneath our feet, revealing a magical underground network that has the power to heal and save our planet. Through the eyes of amazing scientists and mycologists like Paul Stamets, along with best-selling authors like Michael Pollan, Eugenia Bone, and Andrew Weil, we discover the incredible beauty, intelligence, and solutions that the fascinating fungi kingdom has to offer for some of our biggest medical, therapeutic, and environmental challenges. It’s a journey you won’t want to miss!

OUR AWESOME PANEL:
🌱NATALIE HOWE is a professor at George Mason University, where she teaches “Mushrooms, Molds, and Society,” sharing a passion for these unique organisms with students. Additionally, she’s a Natural Resources Specialist at the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, and is a dedicated advocate for the wonders of fungi. Her journey began as a nature teacher at an outdoor school in Rhode Island, where she first discovered the captivating world of lichens. This intrigue led her to study lichens at the University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers. Beyond academia, Natalie actively engages with the community, leading lichen walks and talks with organizations such as the MD Natural History Society and the Mycological Association of Washington DC. With a robust background in Biology, Botany, Ecology, and Conservation, she continues to inspire others to appreciate the natural world.

🌱SERENELLA LINERAS is Facility Director of Mount Rainier Nature Center in Maryland. Known throughout the DC area as a vibrant force in education and mycology, she brings excitement to learning for both kids and adults. Through her innovative program “Ask a Fun-Gal,” she partnered with Mount Rainier Nature Center and the Mycological Association of Washington DC to introduce groundbreaking DNA research experiments, making mycology accessible to the public. Her passion for environmental education earned her the prestigious Environmental Educator award from Nature Forward in January 2024, recognizing her tireless efforts to ignite a love for nature in everyone.

🌱WILLIAM D. NEEDHAM, CAPT USN (ret) is a passionate Master Naturalist from Maryland. As a former president of the Mycological Association of Washington DC, he brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for fungi that’s truly infectious. William thrives in the great outdoors, actively participating in various hiking and nature groups throughout the area. He’s also a talented writer and co-editor of hiking guides for the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, including the popular “Hikes in the Washington Area, Part A,” which showcases the stunning landscapes of Montgomery and Frederick Counties. His latest adventure in publishing, “The Compleat Ambler,” draws inspiration from his engaging blog, Hiker’s Notebook, originally featured on the Sierra Club Potomac Regional Outings website. Not stopping there, William has also penned “The Green Nuclear Option,” a compelling call to action addressing climate change and the urgent need to tackle carbon emissions. With his boundless energy and dedication, William is truly a beacon of inspiration for nature lovers everywhere!

MODERATOR:

🌱ELISA SOLOMON is the Project Coordinator at the Fairfax Food Council. She holds a Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in food security and nutrition. Elisa comprehensively understands food systems and the interrelatedness of public health, nutrition, the environment, equity, economics, and society. She also holds a Bachelor’s in Exercise Science and is a certified exercise physiologist. Additionally, Elisa has used her knack for simplifying complex material by developing and leading health workshops covering various topics for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
